Title: Fruit Flavored Kisses
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] curiously_me

Fandom: Pacific Rim
Pairing: Chuck Hansen/Raleigh Becket
Rating: Teen?

Author Summary:
Chuck researches (and practices) kissing with a fruit and tries the patience of his audience while doing so.

Rec:
Lol, I thought I'd posted this story a long time ago, but apparently not (a fact which I've remedied).

This story was written back in 2013 and is something that I've been fiddling with ever since... It is a cute little story that makes me laugh when I read it and I'm just really proud that I managed to write something halfway decent. I didn't know that you could "learn how to kiss" by using fruit, lol, but the online guide was enough inspiration to make me want to write a Chuck Hansen ficlet as soon as possible.

Title: [podfic] Good Name for a Horse by allfireburns
Reader: [archiveofourown.org profile] curiously_me

Fandom: Doctor Who / Valdemar series
Pairing: Gen
Rating: General

Rec:
This podfic is one of those stories that makes you wonder "yeah, but what if?" and was so much fun to record! It's really short, but it was fun to work in the sound effects for Arthur's "voice" and trying to get the bells to sound something-close-to hoof-beats. It was also a pleasure to work with Reena_Jenkins, who provided the beautiful cover art.

Title: [podfic] combat baby (come back baby) by coffeesuperhero
Reader: [archiveofourown.org profile] curiously_me

Fandom: The Avengers
Pairing: Clint Barton/Phil Coulson
Rating: Mature

Author Summary:
He goes home, because he has nowhere else to go.

Rec:
In a year where I didn't produce much in regards to podfic or fanfic, this particular title stands out as one of my favorites. When I first read this story, it absolutely broke my heart. I didn't consider recording it for many months and when I sat down in front of my microphone, my heart broke all over again. It takes a special combination of characterization and situation in a story for me to connect so thoroughly with a story, and Coffeesuperhero is one of those authors whose writing clicks perfectly for me.

As I was listening to this podfic in preparation for writing up a self-rec for the Snowflake Challenge, it had me in tears for an entirely different reason... I realized that I am Clint. My Grandma died in November and I've done everything I can to not think about it... If I just ignored it, waited long enough, kept living like nothing had changed, it wouldn't be true and she'd still be alive.

I know its not the best podfic in the world, and my voice can be irritating to some, but this story and the experience I had recording it has helped me accept that sometimes things don't get better and that that can be alright.

Day 3 - In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser-known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom who maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

Title: Sansûkh
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] determamfidd

Fandom: The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings
Pairing: Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield, Gimli/Legolas Greenleaf
Rating: Teen and Up

Author Summary:
The battle was over, and Thorin Oakenshield awoke, naked and shivering, in the Halls of his Ancestors.

The novelty of being dead fades quickly, and watching over his companions soon fills him with grief and guilt. Oddly, a faint flicker of hope arises in the form of his youngest kinsman, a Dwarf of Durin's line with bright red hair.

(Follows the story of the War of the Ring).

Review:
This is what I like to call "epic fanfic." With over two hundred thousand words already written and more to come, you are in for the long haul when reading Sansûkh.

This story focuses on Thorin and how he deals with the fact that he is dead and that he has not only failed in his quest, but that he has failed his family as well. It is death fic, but purposefully so, and describes what the afterlife might be for the Dwarves in the Halls of Aulë. It is the story of how he begins to heal and how he helps guide those still alive in Middle-earth, the ones that he loves and wishes to spare from the horrors he has been through... It doesn't always work out.

Each and every character is well written, my favorites would have to be Thorin, Frerin, and Gimli. The relationship that Thorin and Frerin have in death is a bittersweet one, filled with the regret of Frerin's death at so young an age and Thorin's guilt over the loss of his brother. Gimli is extremely caring and, as expected, strong. He cares deeply for his friends and family and is the only person alive who can hear Thorin's voice clearly.

Although there are two "main" pairings listed, the story is so much more than a romance. It is about the sadness one feels over missed opportunities and the hope that the end isn't really the end at all (Kili is particularly adorable in his attempts to convince Aulë to change the rules). It is also about new beginnings and the difficulties a person faces when they find themselves getting closer to someone that their societies says they shouldn't be involved with.

[archiveofourown.org profile] determamfidd has also written a number of wonderful Dwarven women, from Frís and Dís to Gimris (Gimli's younger sister) and Bomfris (Bombur's daughter). These are Dwarven women that I would love to read more of, they are loving and resilient women who will do anything for the ones they love.

Other Notes:
I believe that [personal profile] themusecalliope linked me this story, an act that I am exceedingly grateful for, as I have really enjoyed reading this story.

This is a work in progress, but each new chapter is well worth the wait.

Also, I just discovered the Sansûkh Masterpost on Tumblr. You will find fanart, podfic, songs, and side-stories linked there.

Title: Falling Apart to Half Time by miss_begonia
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] fandomfan

Fandom: Generation Kill AU
Pairing: Brad Colbert/Nate Fick
Rating: R

Author Summary:
Nate thinks: Not dancing is not living. He doesn't say it.

Review:
Let me tell you, as soon as I heard this podfic, it was instantly added to my "favorite podfic of all time" playlist.

[livejournal.com profile] fandomfan is beyond talented and this podfic shows every ounce of that phenomenal skill. From the seamless integration of the music to the emotion each character feels, every minute of this podfic is entertaining.

I love the way [livejournal.com profile] fandomfan reads each character differently, they are all perfectly done. Walt's accent makes me smile, Sixta's comments about the "grooming standard" makes me laugh, and the way Nate thinks about and watches Brad just breaks my heart.

(Spoilers for the end of the podfic) Brad and Nate's dance at the end of the story, when read aloud by [livejournal.com profile] fandomfan, is sheer poetry and it is so damned hot to listen to. Listening to the way that Nate, a dancer for life, feels like he doesn't want to be dancing anymore, if it will let him be close to Brad makes my insides turn to mush. And then? Then Brad kisses him and everything is alright and I'm just sitting in my chair grinning and grinning and wishing that I was in Nate's position, lol.

In conclusion, [livejournal.com profile] fandomfan is amazing and you really need to listen to this podfic.

Title: we ::are pilots::
Artist: Shirozora

Fandom: Tron: Legacy
Pairing: TRON/Sam Flynn
Rating: G

Author Summary:
Overnight SAI rough paint doodle. This is the one I decided will be called "we are pilots" because this, I think, captures Sam and Tron and Pilots!verse better than anything else I ever doodled/painted for the 'verse.

Review:
Before I get into reviewing this piece of art, I feel that I should add a disclaimer that I am not in the slightest artsy, so anything I say will be coming from an uneducated-in-the-arts person, sorry. :$

Every once in awhile, I will indulge myself when I hop online and browse through Shirozora's art. In many of their pieces, you can see the emotion shared between the characters and it just makes me smile to see it. I really appreciate all of their work. The Fandom Snowflake Challenge was the perfect reminder to me to let the world know that.

I am particularly fond of Shirozora's TRON/Sam Flynn fanart (I totally ship it, lol) and, as you can see here, there is a certain sweetness to this piece that speaks of a history full of so much more than you can actually see in the picture. It's nearly overwhelming. I love the way that Sam is stretching up to meet TRON's kiss and how his hands linger on the disc, almost like he's forgotten what he was doing with it, distracted as he is by TRON and those sweet, sweet kisses. And look at the way TRON is sort of perched above Sam, like he's been sitting by quietly as Sam works and just needed to kiss him...

OMG! I'm having feels just typing this review!

Anyways, feels aside, if you are a fan of TRON or enjoy the work of talented artists, I suggest that you check out the rest of Shirozora's work and let them know how awesome they are, yeah?

Other Notes:
[archiveofourown.org profile] shirozora also writes fanfiction, which can be read on AO3.

I am participating in the 2014 Snowflake Challenge and this is my post for day one.

Day One: In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

As I wrote this post, it was not only difficult to find fanworks I felt like I could rec, but then I had to figure out what I was going to say about them. I found that it is surprisingly difficult to find nice things to say about your own work. Every time I thought I'd found something worth reccing or words worth writing, I could find ten things that made it not so good to me.

Having completed this challenge, though, I think that this is something people should do more often. It's a good way to remember that you like what you're doing when you create fanworks.

Title: [podfic] Like Love by solarcat05
Reader: Sly

Fandom: Marvel comics 'verse
Pairing: Peter Parker/Johnny Storm
Rating: Explicit

Rec:
This is my very first podfic, ever, and it is something that I always enjoy listening to. I think that, in the beginning of my podfic life, I was able to read with more feeling without worrying about things like flow, characterization, etc. Now, when I record, those things are always in the back of my mind as I work.

This is why I enjoy listening to this and other of my earliest podfic projects. They show a side of my podfic style that isn't readily apparent in my current works. I hope that people enjoy listening to [podfic] Like Love as much as I do.

2
Title: [fanfic] The Other Winchester 'verse
Author: Sly

Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Castiel/Adam Milligan
Rating: G to Teen

Rec:
I wrote these stories awhile ago, but I really like how this 'verse turned out and would very much like to continue writing in this 'verse in the future... If they ever remember that Adam is still in hell, that is, lol.

Anyways. I can't remember what it was that prompted me to write The Other Winchester 'verse, but if someone were to ever podfic my fanfiction, I would want them to podfic these stories (which is saying a lot, because I'm normally insecure about people wanting to record my fanfic). Knowing how I approach the recording of an author's work, I think it would be very cool to hear a podficcer's reading of my own story.

Regardless of what readers might think, I am particularly proud of every single word I've written in this 'verse and will continue to feel this way no matter what.

Title: [podfic] Growing Pains by leigh_adams
Reader: Sly

Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Fleur Delacour/Bill Weasley
Rating: G

Rec:
For personal reasons, I tend to steer clear of heterosexual relationships in my fanworks, but there are some exceptions and Fleur Delacour/Bill Weasley is one of them. I love reading about the relationship these two characters have and to have the opportunity to podfic a story with them as the main pairing was the icing on the cake. The story is brilliantly written and it was a pleasure to record.

Lol, I'm not exactly language savvy, but with the help of my good friend, [http://archiveofourown.org profile] cantarina, I was able to wrangle (or mangle) the French words/phrases in the story.

I remember that I was getting over a cold when I recorded this podfic, so it sounds a bit nasally, but that doesn't make me enjoy this podfic any less. It gives me warm fuzzies listening to Fleur thinking about her marriage with Bill and worrying about the war going on around them.

4
Title: [fanfic] Noise
Author: Sly

Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Anthony DiNozzo/Jethro Gibbs
Rating: Mature

Rec:
While it is a very short little story, coming in at just under 400 words, I am happy with the emotion and characterization that I wrote into this tiny NCIS ficlet. Tony is my favorite character in the show and it makes me absolutely giddy inside that this is one of the top 5 kudos'd stories I've posted to AO3.

5
Title: [art] Transparency
Artist: Sly

Fandom: Pacific Rim
Pairing: Raleigh Becket/Chuck Hansen/Mako Mori
Rating: G

Rec:
I created the cover art for [http://archiveofourown.org profile] snack_size's Pacific Rim Mini Bang story and I love how it turned out!!! Actually, I might like the cover more than I like the podfic sneak peak I recorded. *le gasp*

When I started working on the art for Transparency, I knew that I wanted to include the few words that Chuck was still capable of saying, then I found the pic of Rob Kazinsky, played around with things a bit, and suddenly I had the cover that I had been seeing in my minds eye. I am most pleased with how this turned out. ;)

6
Title: [fanfic] Cambion 'verse
Author: Sly

Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: General fiction
Rating: G

Rec:
This is one of the few stories I've ever written that, I feel, had a very original idea when it came to the writing. As I wrote this story, I felt that I understood my writing of Jensen and the things he was going through almost as if I could feel them myself. It was a strange thing to write, I felt like my pen was possessed at times, but it is also one of my favorite stories.
